David Hughes, Professor Emeritus of Food Marketing, Imperial College, London

David Hughes is a talker! For the last 30 years, he has lived and worked in many countries in both hemispheres of the world and has always been involved in food and drink. In short, he has a constantly evolving informed view on global food industry developments – from consumer, grocery retail and food service towards one end of the value chain to life science companies at the other, and everything inbetween. Talking to and with senior directors and managers of food and beverage companies, R&D organisations, farmer-owned businesses, government and others, he helps them work out what are the commercial implications of change in their industry and how they might respond to combat threats and embrace opportunities.

The Centre for Food Integrity is a non-profit organization dedicated to building consumer trust and confidence in today’s food system. Charlie works with companies and associations across the food system in issues management, public relations, strategic facilitation and marketing communications. Charlie spent ten years as vice president of communications and public affairs for Premium Standard Farms; he worked for a public relations agency, was an award-winning radio journalist and worked in video and film. Charlie grew up in south-east Nebraska and graduated from the University of Nebraska with a Bachelor of Journalism degree.

The DAFF Young Scientists’ Communication Award

The highly coveted DAFF Young Dairy Scientists’ Communication Award, sponsored by DAFF, will be a highlight of the conference. The Award is designed to encourage those studying dairy science to present their findings and nurture and reward the students’ ability to communicate to dairy farmers. The initiative involves comprehensive mentoring and public speaking training. The top six entrants will be asked to prepare a powerpoint, poster and article for inclusion in the conference proceedings, with their efforts judged by a panel of conference attendees.

The Mooin’ Transfer

This is an off shoot of Dairy Australia’s acclaimed Cows Create Careers program – designed to promote careers in dairy. This year at ADC we feature a chosen school from each dairying state to prepare their ‘pitch’ for how they would convince consumers that milk is worth more than they currently pay!
